As water is plentiful the local scenery is lush and green. The village is close to the National Park and the Sierra Almijara mountains provide a spectacular backdrop for the area.

Visitors and residents are able to enjoy the local bars and restaurants. The village has shops, a bank, a church, a pharmacy, a school and two hotels.

Smaller than nearby Cómpeta, Canillas has a quiet, calm atmosphere. It is essentially a Spanish village where foreign visitors and residents are warmly welcomed.

Cómpeta is only five minutes by car or there is a lovely walk that usually takes around 25 minutes.

Málaga is the closest international airport and is approximately a one-hour drive away. The coast can be reached within 25 minutes.
